Big Brother
As much as I would like to devote an entire post to my big brother (Mr. Social himself), the big brother I'm dealing with lately is in the workplace. I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet. Here's the dealio.
My place of employment seems to have the slowest internet connection in the universe. It is at a point where dial-up would put it to shame. Remember the days when you'd save all that heavy duty downloading and on-line video watching for your "work" computer? It seems like the opposite is now true for me. My internet at work is slower than molasses.
After a great deal of frustration (page loads timing out, file transfers that take a week, etc.) our IT department decided to crack down. A very stern e-mail was sent telling people not to STREAM ANYTHING. This, of course, was simply a reminder of the internet usage contract everyone signed a couple of years ago (yours truly never signed it as I figured they couldn't punish me for something I never technically agreed to - and btw, I wasn't streaming anything). Anyhoo, several e-mails followed explaining what STREAMING means (no, I'm not kidding) and almost instantly the connection was better - for like a day. Then, I can only assume that everything went back to status quo - the daily streaming free for all.
Now, I've been told on the QT that all managers are will start receiving an internet usage report for everyone on his or her staff. Dandy. I don't really know what this entails but I shall know soon because I am, afterall, a manager. In any case, I've been scared the last few days to go anywhere near my blog for fear that my boss will see how many times a day I frequent it checking for comments - or worse yet - he'll read it. Then again, what would he really find out? - That my nick name is preppygirl? - That I use the F -word? - That I dye my hair, love sushi, and need to lose 22.3 pounds? Somehow, I don't think he'd care (and probably already knows about the F-word thing).
So, if I don't frequent your blogs as much, for now, you'll know why. Part of me thinks it's all a scare tactic - guess I'll know once I receive my first report - or my pink slip.

My soon to be former employer has really started cracking down on internet usage and has started blocking a lot of stuff like message boards. I can only imagine blogs are next.
I will be curious to see what the outcome of this is!

Bummer.
I hope none of your employees are looking at anything freaky. I've spotted one of my coworkers looking at...let's just say girls...online on numerous occasions. He's not too quick about getting it off his screen when you come in his cubicle either. Blech.

Don't take this the wrong way, but...
Receiving a list of your staff's usage will do nothing...NOTHING! If you want to police usage a history of everyone's usage SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE.
The problem with notifying management is that they may be offenders too. If their staff policed them (management), it would keep them honest too.
And when I say everyone... I mean everyone! Even the top of the organization would be subject to scrutiny by the guy who cleans the toilets.
