OBX

Okay, I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a fan of the monniker "OBX." People wear it on t-shirts or stick it on their cars like a badge of honor after staying in the famed Outer Banks of North Carolina. But after my recent visit to this tourist trap, I'll have to admit - while I may not possess an affinity for the abbrev., I can honestly now say, "I get it."

My in-laws rented a house on the beach for one week in Kill Devil Hills near the Avalon fishing pier. I was initially bummed there was no private pool (a luxury
we traded for beach front living) but my disappointment was quelled on day one (personally, I'd prefer the pool but the kids love, love, LOVED the beach). I got in some good beach running and almost forgot how much I miss a little pro kadima in the surf. The house was not huge but what the hell do ya really need at the beach? A place to change in and out of your suit, a fridge to keep the drinks cold and somewhere to lay your head. This little house nicely provided all three and then some. Plenty of space for all - we didn't even get on each others' nerves - shocker fer sure.

Favorite stops included Awful Arthurs (great food but don't go at dinnertime unless you expect to wait), Kmart (get what you need without paying jacked up beach prices), Tanger Outlets (not overloaded with stores which made it manageable in an afternoon), Avalon Fishing pier (dirty old arcade inside which provided plenty o' skee ball fun), and best stop, hands down - Outer Banks Brewing Station (where we enjoyed lunch then returned for dinner the next day). Wind powered brewing and a playground for the kids - bonus!

All in all a great trip. A little touristy, but that's to be expected - and not really any different than what I experienced living in Fort Lauderdale (or living around here by our glorious lake in the summer for that matter). While my first loyalty to tropical getaways will always be to Key West - OBX, we can now be friends.

Slea and Me-a Go Swimsuit Shopping

So I tortured Princess last night by making her critique my bathing suit choices in the dressing room at Sears. I tried on suit after suit, complaining that they all looked like old lady suits. The turning 40 thing is starting to sink in more and more everyday. I want to be covered up, but not too much. I want to look cute, but not like I'm trying too hard. I want to wear two pieces and not be scrutinized for dressing too young. What the hell people? Why is this so difficult? - Well, as Princess reminded me "What do you expect? We are at SEARS not some awesome store like Anthropolgie!" Point taken. And so the search continues.

Screaming Like a Little Preppygirl

Last week, I experienced something, the likes of which I never thought I would. I attended a concert - a New Kids on the Block / Backstreet Boys concert. Yep, I sure did. Now before you get all judgmental on me ("I never thought she would stoop so low!", "I thought I KNEW her." etc.), listen up - it was fucking awesome - and I can't get them outta my brain.
  • Step one - I see NKOTBSB on the AMA's. I flip. I must've watched the clip 15 times in one day.
  • Step two - Hubby decides this would be a great Christmas present
  • Step three - Hubby plots with Muzenews's husband Makkaio to shock the shit out of their wives on Christmas
  • Step Four - I can give you more...
  • Step Five - It's just a matter of time until we book our swanky Holiday Inn Express and we're on our way
We saw them in Pittsburgh on June 15th and dammit if it wasn't one of the best days in a long time. Side trips to Ikea and Grove City outlets were just the icing on the cake (as was a nicely buzzed walk down Carson Street before the concert).
We got all dolled up (and looked great compared to the vast majority - skank central, yeesh) and headed over to the Consol Engery Center, just across the bridge from our hotel. Once inside, we walked and walked and walked to our seats and to our surprise, found ourselves in the mutha freakin' Club Section of the arena! - HULLO?!?!? Could this night get any better? Uh fuck yeah it could. Two great opening acts (including Jordin Sparks - WHAT??) and we were on our way. They opened with an upbeat version of the catchy Ne-Yo NKOTB song "Single" and I just about exploded. My screams began here and only let up once when I went to the ladies room (I almost missed The Right Stuff). My pitch surely became deafening while Joey sang Please Don't Go Girl and when Donnie ripped his shirt off. Speaking of ripped - he WAS. Drool, ouch, etc.

I was kinda shocked (yet smiling) about all the jumbo-tron crotch shots. What the hell? These were not the teenaged NKOTBs that I remembered - and I couldn't have been happier about it. Poor Muzenews suffered from me screaming into her ear for two hours straight - but I know she was as hot and bothered as I was, especially about Joey. YUM with a capital Y. I gotta give props to Backstreet Boys as well for their effort. My only question - what the eff is up with Nick? I was almost certain his limbs would get trapped under the hydraulic stage when he decided he was too cool for school and laid down with his legs dangling over the edge of the raised platform. Whatevs.

While I wasn't sure what this night would bring, it exceeded every expectation. So anyone that wants to laugh at me, go right ahead. I had a kick ass night while you sat at home and watched netflix. Stick that in your white fedora and smoke it.

PS - Fathead's has the best microbrews and sandwiches in South PGH.

Please don't go PGirl!!!!! Off to bed to dream about being the meat in a McIntyre/Wahlberg sandwich.

Ha! - It's only been 11 months not a whole year!

So blog world - are you still there? Hello? Is this thing on? Let's skip the recap and jump right in.

Today my house is messy. Messier than usual but not horrible. I invited people over tonight so I would HAVE to clean it. And yet, but still, I choose to blog - something I have skipped for 11 months. I am quite possibly in full on avoidance mode - not to mention the fact that I'm enjoying my 9 year old daughter's attempts at PS2's Simpsons Road Rage (Homer just shouted out "Dumb Ass!") I'm sure she's heard worse in this house.

Enough stalling - off to clean. I'll bet this post is about 1/85 as interesting as you thought it'd be. Update on the clean situation forthcoming.

Back

What's new in the world of Prep you ask? The kids are older, the dog is older, and I too am decidedly older. Galoot is still driving me crazy... with love!!! - heh. My sense of humor has not changed nor has my obsession over cleaning and organizing my home. Anyone who has visited casa du preppygirl in the last week or so (I'm talkin' 'bout you, muzenews) has seen it lookin' not so tidy. Still learning to cope with the mess. Good news is, we have a new toilet, so at least all my dreams of a decluttered home can be flushed away efficiently. LOL - I kid.

Anyhoo, looking forward to getting back to my blog reading fans - all one of you.

Tagged and Takin' It!!

My ex... worked out next to me at the YMCA last week. The awkwardness was amplified when the machine he was on broke and he moved to a treadmill DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME. I struggled for places to look besides straight ahead. Three machines over, Galoot seemed unaffected and somewhat oblivious.

Maybe I should... color my hair red again.

I love... a clean house.

People would say... I'm too nice.

I don't understand... investing. I mean, I understand why we should and the basics surrounding it but beyond that - total confusion.

When I wake up in the morning... I'm often still tired.

I lost... the receipt for my wedding ring and it needs to be fixed and now I'm screwed. St. Anthony... HELP!!!

Life is full of... joy.

My past is something... I sometimes choose to forget.

I get annoyed when... I find dirty dishes around the house (and yes, they are very occasionally mine).

Parties are... fun but messy.

I wish... Princess lived closer to me.

Dogs... are lovable but stinky.

Cats... are no fun.

Tomorrow... I am going to a family reunion where I will know virtually no one.

I have a low tolerance for... Green peppers, people who can't (or won't) think for themselves, laziness.

If I had a million dollars... I'd buy a big house where, we all could live...

I'm totally terrified of... dying with regrets.

Feel free to STEAL for your posting pleasure!

Cut the crap.

As you may have read with Galoot, Pgirl Jr. had a rough night Wednesday. She'd been sleeping with her best bud (Princess Slea Jr.) for about 4 nights in a row. Princess and the kids left Wednesday morning - so when Wednesday night rolled around, Pgirl Jr. suddenly could not sleep. I guess being separated from her BFF was making for a restless night. For some reason, she decided to take some scissors and give herself a trim... in the dark... sans a mirror. I didn't have the heart to take a pic of it the next morning but I can tell you I upset her beyond any level of necessity - (at one point she asked, "do you still love me mommy?") I was clearly more traumatized than she was.

Last night, we took her to get it "fixed." And, in all honesty, it looks pretty cute. The girl did a good job of blending together the parts where my daughter had chopped out huge chunks. In a show of solidarity, I will get my own summer cut tomorrow. Details to follow...

She loves it!
