Oh say can you see?
Friday I took my oldest for Kindergarten screening. When all was said and done, the school nurse pulled me aside to express her concerns over my daughter's eyesight. She measured her left eye at 20/70! Yikes! I was shocked to say the least. I've never seen her squint or complain about her eyesight in any way. (denial was setting in)
Sunday I took her to Wal-mart vision center (with no vision insurance, it's the most reasonable place around). My daughter was a little apprehensive (she thought we were shopping for sunglasses) but she was doing okay. The doctor was really nice. He asked if she knew all her letters yet (at which point she sang the ABC song, loud and proud). I said she knew most of them by sight but not all - so he decided to test her with pictures instead. He started by projecting several pictures onto the wall and asked her to identify each. She was doing fine, "A duck, a birthday cake, a man riding a horse." Each projection he showed her got progressively smaller, but she was doing well - until the jeep. He projected a picture of jeep, which I could see very clearly. She struggled with it - I could see the frustration on her face. I thought to myself, "It's so clear - Can't she see that jeep?" Suddenly she says to the doctor - "VEHICLE! I couldn't remember the word." I burst out laughing (as did the doctor). Here I thought she was blind and she simply didn't know how to describe the picture (not a car, not a truck but a vehicle mommy!) Not bad for a 4 year old.
As it turns out, she is a bit more near sighted than most kids her age. He did recommend glasses and he'll re-test her in a year. Oh well. I'm glad they caught it now. I just hope it doesn't give her a complex (she already has one about her freckles). She picked out some pink frames (of course) and they'll be ready in a few days. Rose colored glasses just took on a whole new meaning!

Aw, that's cute about the vehicle. It makes me think of how our son is constantly correcting us when we describe a truck the wrong way "Not red truck - Red DUMP truck".
I'm hope she'll do well with the glasses...I'm surprised freckles bother her at that age. I don't think I was self conscious about anything at age 4. I made up for it big time as a teenager...and now I'm not very self conscious anymore. Go figure.

Ya the freckle thing comes from a little girl at her school who teases her a bit about them. We always tell her each freckle is like a beauty mark - the more you have the more beautiful you are!
We just picked up the glasses and she seems okay with them so far. I got my glasses prescription updated at the same time so she could be "like mommy." I'm sure she'll adjust within a few days (at least I hope!)

That's adorable - both about the rose-colored glasses (what a great tie-in!) and the vehicle. Cutie pie!

Too cute! Audrey once had some sort of test given to her and instead of identifying a man, she said Jesus (because he had a beard).
I hope she does OK with the glasses and the cool pink frames!

She is so precious. My mother, a natural red-head, always said freckles were angel kisses. We never believed her, but your daughter might like it.
